What Have you Been Doing?

We have been cooking a lot around here...

Grilled and marinated corn on the cob bites.600 dolmas, wrapped by me, well Ben stepped in during hour number 3 to help me with a little assembly line. I was quite happy when I realized that yes I can wrap 100 dolmas in 25 minutes, but that meant it would still take 3 hours to wrap 600. I do love some good old repetetive tasks, but I think I only like doing it 300 times, after that it really is just labor. This task seemed to be never ending with to many interuptions, nursing, changing diapers, making lunch, reading books. Thankfully there was an end. This week we made truly a shitload of hummous, not may people can really quantify what a "shitload" is perhaps, but we have finally figured it out. This is 5.5 gallons of hummous- more than needed, but we are okay with a little left over for us and friends (let me know if you need some hummous). We are very lucky to have that happy baby as well.400 tomato skewers later....thankfully more than the normal trend this summer. 300 people this past friday and 40 on Saturday. It was quite a boost in business world. The summer was rocky to put it nicely, we were breaking from the pressure of it, and have hopefully rounded the corner. It is nice to actually make more money than it costs you to live!!
And most of the mess is cleaned up before the other cooking resumes tonight.

The Most Specialist of Places

While we were back east for a short visit, we did get a chance to do one of the things we always do when we are there, visit the stream that runs a quick walk through Ben's family's back yard. This is a very special place for all of us and it was River's first visit to the place that started his Papa's love of all water that flows, which led to R's name.
This is where Ben proposed to me, where we have spent countless afternoons and where I hope my boys will learn to swim and fish.
Asher seemed right at home to return. Stripped down swimming like a fish. It was a beautiful, perfect evening. We can't wait to be back.

Mothering

Lately I have been feeling an overwhelmed amount of something, be it pride, happiness, joy, love, gratitude-I can't really put my finger on it, and it is not the same feeling of overwhelmingness that has riddled my daily life since R's arrival-just an emotional state of being that makes me so very grateful for these boys that I have in my life.

River has been here for over 6 months now. It is hard to imagine life without him, yet I remember the calm that existed in this far off place. A time when really I had no one to think of but myself. While there are definitely moments when I wish I could be back to that place, sewing, knitting, drinking wine, listening to music, anything on a whim- I know that these moments with my boys will go by way to fast and then I will be longing for them. Instead of longing for them in the future, I am really trying to embrace them in the now. I have become better at balancing myself and my babes, I knit now in there room while sometimes nursing one and reading to the other. I cut fabric for sewing while Asher plays at his art table and does sewing cards and River's has a kick ass afternoon nap. I worry less about the things I could be doing while I read the same annoying book for the 5th time or while I am laying down nursing for what seems to be the millionth minute. I enjoy all of my moments, be them tantrums, laughter, poops or hugs. My my River you have reshaped our family, always for the better. I have changed as a mother in so many ways, be it patience with Asher, patience with myself, more love for the world, more creativity as a parent, more respect for my partner the list goes on and on.Nothing changes things more in a landscape than a river, they meander, ebb and flow. They are fast and slow depending on the parent material that makes up their bed and the rainfall. They change with the seasons and as they age, and they forever impact the world around them. This little boy will never know how much his name has come to suit him since it was given to him. Someday I will try and explain, but this emotion will disappear and as much as an impact these days may have shaping who we will become, words just really can't explain what they all mean. BTW, 6 months, 22 lbs, 12 oz, 27.5 inches long. My back is breaking, so I hope the weight starts plateauing. He is pulling himself up to stand and crawling, not with complete grace, but he gets whereever he wants to go. He has two bottom teeth that popped up three weeks ago, poops pretty consistantly on the potty and communicates with us more and more. Oh and being part of our family the obvious: he love loves food!!

Tough Times

When tough times fall upon you, it is always good to have some good friends you can rely on. This year has been one of the worst tomato growing seasons. Not enought heat and to much mosisture leads to bland, watery fruit. Plus all that other business. When the brandywines, beefsteaks let us down it is good to have Sungolds and Green Grapes kicking ass and producing as they always do.
Therefore, it makes me even happier that we planted a whole bunch of Sungolds- or around here, the Gateway Tomato. You see, once upon a time I was not a tomato lover. I was put off by those bred for traveling, not for flavor or nutritonal sorts- you know the grocery store tomato in January variety. Thank goodness my tastebuds were picy because when tomatoes and I started our love affair, I was able to really enjoy and indulge in the best tomatoes on the planet, grown with my own hands. The sungold was the little bite that hooked me and from then on I have never been hesitant to eat any garden variety- I will avoid a tomato out of season like the plague. We have had fresh tomatoes around here well into October, I think we even kept one until November, picked green, wrapped in newspaper, stored in a cardboard box, pulling it out later to ripen and enjoy. We can them pureed from the blender, freeze them whole and this year, the biggest indulgence- drying them in my new dehydrator. Oh the sweetness of the sungolds ready for our winter without them.

Bubbie's Birthday (a week ago)

Good Food, Good Weather, Great People= one Fabulous Celebration for one wonderful Lady. I think the pictures tell the tale well enough.

Bubbie/Mom/Meryl turned 60 on August 16th and we braved the long road trip to celebrate. Originally this was our big vacation of the summer, full of ocean visits, aquarium trips, fishing, great east coast food, walking down our past life, visiting with old friends. Stressed isn't really the way to describe life as we know it these days, but I don't have a better one. Needless to say we cut our vacation, but were lucky enough to enjoy a family reunion. 4 days of driving and 2 days with none, it was worth it for all the fun with people we don't see often enough.

But holy cow, I am so so so so so happy to be home.

Wisconsin State Fair

To say that Asher really enjoyed the State Fair would be a bit of an understatement. This kid is wired for the state fair.
posing with his mama. Driving a tractor, even though he legs are still just a wee too short for the pedaling.
Talking about goat and sheep poop (he is obsessed with poop thanks to the Little Mole who went in Search of the Who Dunnit-such a great, funny book)
Riding the plastic cow, a little disappointing.
What could possibly put this much pure glee on a little boys face?
Oh the racing pigs...
and then the racing ducks.
Absolute excitement. I could hardly believe how entertained he was. I don't know how ethical this whole display is, but A love loved it.
Kaylin also enjoyed the fair after a bit of a rest.
Shane too.

Asher did no sleeping and danced until the end when he got his cream puff, danced some more and handled himself quite well when he found out he is 2 inches to little to ride the wonderwheel.

Happy Anniversary

to some of the most wonderful grandparents out there. In honor of their 34 years, here are some pictures of them with their four grandkids, the first picture ever. Sarah and I went out of our way to spend a bit of time together and really maxize the square inches of Japanese fabric she brought back from Japan and made matching outfits for the kiddos. Kaylin got a cute round neck dress and the boys all got pants that I made up patterns for.
Grandma of course had the perfect color in her wardrobe to match the kids.
The pockets were such a cute touch, we were pretty proud of ourselves for those both on the pants and Kaylin's dress.
Close up of Kaylin's dress.
Asher's shorts.
Waiting excitedly for grandpa to give him cherry tomatoes with a white shirt on.
I loved the added stripe of fabric on the side of A's shorts.
